Fireworks Safety: Leave It to the Professionals
Around the Fourth of July, fireworks injuries are more common than many realize — and children are especially vulnerable to burns, eye injuries, and harm from explosions and projectiles.
Remember: fireworks are gunpowder explosives, and given Riverwoods' wooded setting, the risks are even greater.
Fireworks Are Illegal in Riverwoods
Even if certain fireworks can be purchased legally in neighboring states, they are illegal to use or possess in Illinois — and prohibited in Riverwoods year-round, with no holiday exception. This includes firecrackers, skyrockets, Roman candles, and any explosive or flammable devices. (Village Code 5-1E-5)
A Note on Sparklers
Sparklers are not prohibited by state law or Village ordinance, but use extreme caution: the tip burns at 1,200 degrees — nearly four times hotter than a match. Young children should not handle sparklers. Older children should be closely supervised and made aware of the dangers, even after sparklers are extinguished.
The best way to keep your family safe is to skip the home fireworks altogether and enjoy a professional public display instead.
