Light through the Trees

Riverwoods is fortunate to be surrounded by beautiful natural areas that invite us to slow down and enjoy the outdoors. One simple wellness practice gaining popularity is forest bathing—the act of intentionally spending quiet time in nature while engaging your senses.

The next time you’re in a local forest preserve, neighborhood park, or even your own backyard, consider setting aside about 20 minutes to unplug from your phone and simply observe your surroundings. Notice the sounds of birds, the movement of leaves in the breeze, the patterns of sunlight, and the variety of plants and wildlife around you. Taking slow, deep breaths and paying attention to the natural world can be a relaxing way to reduce stress and appreciate the beauty of the season.

Whether you visit Ryerson Woods, the Des Plaines River Trail, or another favorite natural area, taking time to connect with nature is a wonderful way to support both physical and mental well-being.

Inspired by “A Forest Bathing Invitation” by Jess Rodriguez, published in the Summer 2026 issue of Thrive, Brushwood Center at Ryerson Woods.
