Property inspections are an important service NSMAD offers the communities they serve that helps to minimize mosquito activity around their residence or business.

Residents are encouraged to contact NSMAD prior to hiring a private mosquito control company. One of their Field Technicians will perform a free inspection and treat any breeding sources with the appropriate larval control product, as well as provide additional info regarding your mosquito issues.

What to Expect When Requesting A Property Inspection

An NSMAD Field Technician will perform the following:

  • Identify breeding sources on residents’ or business’ property.
  • When possible, tip out any water found in items that can be a breeding source.
  • Treat any sources that cannot be tipped over or properly discarded with an appropriate larval control treatment.
  • Take a sample of any eggs, larvae or pupae to identify the species of mosquito.
  • Identify any adult mosquito harborage sources.
  • Educate residents on best practice tactics to minimize mosquito activity on their property including removing containers, tarps, and toys that hold water; using a Thermacell or fan and applying insect repellent.
  • When necessary, they inspect adjacent properties for possible breeding or harborage sources and perform larval treatments as needed. There will be times when the NSMAD will need to return to the neighboring property later to perform these services. Should this occur, the NSMAD Field Tech will enter a service request for those properties to make sure that they are inspected and treated appropriately.

About NSMAD

NSMAD employs a multi-faceted approach to mosquito control, focusing on surveillance, control, and public education. Surveillance includes mosquito and tick trapping, pathogen testing, and resistance testing. Control methods involve source reduction, larval control, and adult mosquito control. The NSMAD emphasizes larval control to reduce adult mosquito populations and minimize the need for adult control measures, since larval mosquitoes are stationary, while adults can travel miles. Night-time ULV spraying is used for adult control when necessary.
