Beware of IRS Scams

With tax season upon us, there may be an increase in calls from telephone scammers pretending to be with the Internal Revenue Service and demanding money for unpaid taxes.  Here is what to watch for.

Internal Revenue Service Scam

Callers purport to be an Internal Revenue Service (IRS) representative and uses intimidation tactics such as threatening legal action and arrest if taxes are not paid over the phone immediately.  Victims are then instructed to use a specific payment method such as a prepaid debit card, gift card, or wire transfer.

The IRS will never:

  • Call to demand immediate payment using a specific payment method such as a prepaid debit card, gift card, or wire transfer. Generally, the IRS will first mail a bill to any taxpayer who owes taxes.
  • Threaten to immediately bring in local police or other law enforcement groups to have the taxpayer arrested for not paying.
  • Demand that taxes be paid without giving taxpayers the opportunity to question or appeal the amount owed.
  • Call unexpectedly about a tax refund.

If you receive an IRS scam call, hang up.  You can report the contact to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at https://www.tigta.gov/reportcrime-misconduct or call 800-366-4484.
