01/07/22 Sheila Hollander Selected as 2021 Citizen of the Year

Sheila Hollander holding award

The 2021 Citizen of the Year was awarded to longtime resident Sheila Hollander.  The Citizen of the Year Award is a special recognition that celebrates residents for their outstanding volunteerism and commitment to the community. Jill Kaplan, Riverwoods Resident Association President, presented Sheila with a personalized plaque at the December 21, 2021 board of trustees meeting.

During the presentation, Sheila was described as "the ultimate volunteer" which is fitting since she spearheaded the development of the community garden plots near the police station. The plots are so popular and coveted that Sheila holds an annual lottery to determine which lucky residents may grow plants and vegetables for the season. Additionally, Sheila was chairperson of the native plant sale for many years. Sheila headed up a volunteer team that selected native plants appropriate for Riverwoods and worked with local nurseries to stock, take orders and distribute purchases in our community. The native plants sold at the plant sale are critical to the success of our diverse woodland ecosystems.

Congratulations and thank you Sheila!
